The Worst Fitness Myths That Just Won’t Die

It’s crazy how much bad fitness advice is still out there. Some of it is outdated, some is straight-up nonsense, and yet, people keep believing it.

Here is FIVE pieces of advice that I think is ridiculous:

“Splits don’t Matter”

This is commonly followed by talking about training intensity and how it’s more important to train hard than to have a specific program.

Yes training intensity is important however you can’t recover from a poor program.

If you have a program where you have a ton of volume or you aren’t hitting your muscles frequently enough, you are doing yourself a disservice.

Workout splits do have a place and that’s why coaches exist to program for people. One program won’t work for everyone.

They are specific to ones recovery, enjoyment, and goals.

Do a Loading Phase When Starting Creatine

This is very silly in my opinion. For some reason this is preached to help get results faster but I don’t see the point. This is catering to those who want results quicker than possible.

You’re going to be taking creatine like it’s a vitamin, everyday.

So, the creatine will saturate in your body with time. There is no reason to speed up the process just because you want to see results quicker. It’s an undisciplined way of thinking.

Free Weights Grow More

This is constantly commented on my posts about the benefit of training on machines.

Free weights have their place and a lot of my clients use free weights. However, it’s not because they grow your muscles quicker. It’s as simple as, they like free weights and have more fun with them.

As a coach, I want my clients to enjoy their training, so I will definitely program something they enjoy over something that is better. At least in the beginning stages of their lifting journey.

I want them excited to go into the gym, it shouldn’t feel like a challenge.

Machines will be better from a hypertrophy standpoint, but there are always times where ‘enjoyment’ will overrule productiveness.

Resistance Training isn’t Functional

Another goofy statement by lots of people on social media. Resistance training has incredible benefits on the body from mobility to strength, it helps with all.

Resistance training reduces the chances of injuries, increases your overall strength for tasks like carrying groceries, as well as strengthens your bones and joints.

So don’t get sucked into these scams that tell you not to resistance train, it’s beneficial for EVERYONE.

Abs Aren’t “Made” in the Kitchen

I’ve talked about this plenty of times in the past so I will be brief.

Abs are shown with a change in your diet but they will be grown in the gym.

Just like any other muscle.
