When to Workout While Being Sick

A couple days ago, I woke up and immediately knew I wasn’t 100% myself.

I knew I had either a little cold or bug and knew I had to take some extra measures to recover.

It was just enough to make going to the gym a challenge, so I took a few days off.

When trying to decide when you should be going to the gym or not, usually I recommend holding off on lifting heavy weights.

This is because, if you are trying to build the most muscle, you are usually focusing on progress overload and training to failure.

So when you’re sick, you’ll notice you won’t be able to lift as much as you usually do.

This is because you’re energy levels are low, and your body is trying to fight something else so it can’t focus on the output of your strength.

This makes progressive overload (lifting more than you did last week) much harder.

But this doesn’t mean you should avoid all activity levels.

Going for a walk or doing some mobility work, can be a helpful tool in clearing your head.

At times, being sick will force you on the couch, but if you can take even 10 minutes of light movement, this can help with getting better as soon as possible.

A Burst Of Motivation

Being sick is usually surrounded by a lot of negative emotions.

However, there is a positive side of it.

Usually when sick, you are stuck doing nothing but watching your favourite movies.

This gives you plenty of time to get excited about being back to normal and sometimes gives you a burst of motivation to get right back on that healthy lifestyle train.

Motivation comes and goes, so this is why being sick can help you get a massive push to take bigger steps towards your fitness goals.

So, don’t look at being sick as a negative thing. Look at it as a helpful tool to regain focus on your health.
